Analysis

The total number of hate crimes in the county has fluctuated from 15 to 32 per year from the reviewed period of 2015 to 2020.

Current Status

Hate crimes are often underreported for a variety of reasons including fear, distrust, and misunderstanding of what is considered a hate crime. Oakland County has been awarded a JAG/Byrne grant to increase the public awareness of hate crimes and expand/enhance the reporting of hate crimes. The county is committed to working with stakeholders and local communities to raise awareness, provide resources, and implement solutions towards the eradication of hate crimes.
