Why Is This Important?
The safety experienced in our homes and in our communities is a top reason people live in Oakland County. It is critical that all levels of government support evidence-based strategies to reduce crime including programs to improve the physical environment, strengthen anti-violence social norms, reduce substance abuse, and mitigate financial stress. The County is also committed to supporting a judicial process that is viewed as fair and impartial by community members. Research suggests that community safety is supported when justice systems operate with transparency and openness.
Metric Definition
The crime rate figures are calculated as the number of crimes per 100,000 population. The figures are normalized in this way by the FBI in order to compare rates across jurisdictions of different sizes and control for population changes.

Analysis
Current Status
In 2021, Oakland County committed $1 million to the Community Policing Innovations fund to provide grants for Oakland County Law Enforcement agencies to advance community policing initiatives.
The mission of Oakland County Community Corrections is to reduce recidivism by providing a continuum of services that adhere to evidence base principles. They recently received a grant to establish a peer lead reentry program with Nation Outside.
Oakland County also aims to help reduce the harmful effects of the justice process. In addition to the Indigent Defense Services Office, Oakland County has secured funding from the state to stand up a Public Defender's Office to ensure residents receive qualified legal representation.
Oakland County Workforce Development/Oakland County Michigan Works! received $620K in funding from the state to launch and operate the Oakland County Clean Slate program. This program will assist returning citizens in expunging eligible convictions from their criminal records to aid them in their pursuit of employment opportunities.
